John Bishop has quit Twitter after receiving abuse directed at his family.

The 47-year-old, who is currently on the road taking his Supersonic tour around the UK, has left Twitter after getting hateful messages about his loved ones.

'I am taking some time off Twitter. I can take anything but when scumbags have a forum to abuse people I love I think it's time to move away,' he tweeted yesterday.

Bishop 's decision to leave the social networking site comes after he responded to one Twitter user, whose account has been suspended, with the angry message: 'you are a s**thouse w****** who deserves no attention so you won't get any and you can rot in your own bile. You sad loser.'

Bishop has been sharing updates from his UK stand-up tour, and retweeting messages to his 2.7 million followers from his fans who have enjoyed his shows.

His wife, Michelle Bishop, who has been married to the comedian for over 20 years has also left Twitter.
