Country Music Awards Top Game of Thrones On Twitter

Last week's How I Met Your Mother finale took over Twitter and inspired 624,000 140-character goodbyes, critiques, and quips, but The 49 th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards helped CBS top itself, with 1 million event-related Tweets that were seen by a Unique Audience of 7.4 million people, according to the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings Weekly Top Ten Series and Specials list.

Country music lovers don't mess around. The show even beat out the season premiere of HBO's megahit Game of Thrones (300,000 Tweets), ABC's Scandal (340,000), WWE Monday Night RAW, and the April 3 Late Show With David Letterman, which saw 25,000 Tweets no doubt because of the longtime late night legend's announcement that he'll be 'wrapping things up' in 2015.

Everyone from The Simpsons to Ellen DeGeneres to Tina Fey paid tribute to Letterman. Twitter was also full of hints about women who could step into Letterman's shoes. Lena Dunham suggested Retta (who is hilarious as @UnfoRETTAble on Twitter and Donna on Parks and Recreation), and Chelsea Handler had her share of supporters and detractors, since her contract with E! is coming to an end and it seemed like she might be in the running.

Stephen Colbert's name is also being thrown around as a strong potential replacement, but for now it's anyone's guess which candidate will land the gig.

Until then, check out the rest of the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings Weekly Top Ten.
