MIAMI (CBSMiami) - As a gunman went on a shooting rampage inside the Strozier Library at Florida State University, social media played a major role as word spread like wildfire.

Student Blair stokes was studying when the shots rang out. She immediately began to Tweet about what was happening.

She went on to tweet that she was scared, shaking and didn't want to die.

Student Danny Morales tweeted out this.

He then followed it up with this.

Some of the student's parents learned what was going on through social media. One father in Jacksonville said he saw a twee from his daughter which read 'There's a man with a gun in the library. I love you.'

Florida State officials even used Twitter to keep students and parents alike informed as to what was going on.

Be Advised: The victims' families have been notified. #FSU students/faculty/employees, please contact loved ones & let them know you are ok.
