“Women Looking at Art” Tumblr Proves Women Look at Art

So we're not sure if you guys are aware, but women are doing things. Like, all the time. In all kinds of places, too - probably even in your very neighborhood. (Are you a woman reading this article right now? Case in point.) And still, we here in the Media tend to get very excited when women do these things that they do. Today, however, one Tumblr has soundly lapped us all in appreciating women and their various activities, and that Tumblr is called ' Women Looking at Art.' Want to guess what's in the pictures?

Now, lest you think this is one of those hidden-agenda lady-image series - à la the highlighting of a bizarrely specific advertising trope in ' Women Laughing Alone With Salad' or the recognition of misandry through the ages with The Toast's ' 500 Years of Women Ignoring Men ' - never fear. 'Women Looking at Art' seems to be essentially a less extensive Google Image search of just that. 'Look at the women!' each post demands. 'Look at them, looking at art!' And we do.

Of course, with a little cognitive legwork, one could glean from the photos posted thus far the fact that over half the women in these images are clearly models provocatively performing 'looking' and are therefore necessarily conscious of their 'to-be-looked-at-ness,' compounded by the fact that many of them are faceless, which brings up age-old questions of female bodies as objects versus subjects operating in a predominantly male-directed societal gaze.

To which we say, take it down the street, buddy. We're just here to look at women. Who do things.
