TWITTER SENDS TWO SENIOR OFFICIALS TO TURKEY

- Social media giants twitter will send two of their senior officials to Ankara, Turkey. They will meet with the nations official authorities on Monday. Turkey and Twitter have been on starkly unfriendly terms due to the popular microblogging site's failure to implement Turkish court decisions that ordered the removal of certain web links on the grounds of privacy violations. Twitter's unwillingness to act in accordance with the rule of law in Turkey led the country's telecoms authority to block access to the site in march. While the ban is criticized by a number of people who claim it limits freedom of expression, officials demanded Twitter to open an office in the country, follow court rulings and pay taxes for tens of millions of dollars in ads that are generated in Turkey. While the social media giant strictly complies with financial and administrational rules in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, it turns a blind eye to laws and regulations in Turkey and refuses to open a branch or pay taxes.

Twitter does not have an office in Turkey despite Turkish authorities' requests for it to open a local branch. Turkey is the seventh largest market for Twitter with an estimated 10 million users who have signed up to use the service. Turkish President Abdullah Gül is the second-most followed political leader globally after only President Barack Obama of the United States, with four million and forty million followers respectively.
