Facebook announced on Tuesday that it had reached a $2 billion agreement to buy Oculus VR, the maker of a virtual reality headset, in a bet that social networking will one day become an immersive, 3-D experience.
The deal was an unexpected move by Facebook because Oculus, a small start-up that has not yet shipped a product to the broader public, is working on what some view as a niche technology aimed at hard-core video game players. Facebook said it had much bigger plans for the technology.
'After games, we're going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences,' Facebook's founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said in a post on the social networking site. 'Imagine enjoying a courtside seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face to face - just by putting on goggles in your home.'

'Mobile is the platform of today, and now we're also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow,' Mr. Zuckerberg's post continued. 'Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate.'
