YouTube Website Goes Down

YouTube, the world's third most popular website, went down for a short period on Monday, giving the millions of people who depend on the service for videos of news and kittens a heavy sense of withdrawal.

People who visited the site met with a bit of comic relief about the hiccup. Below a banner of text that read '500 Internal Server Error,' the site noted: 'Sorry, something went wrong. A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation.' The text, referring to the monkeys, said, 'If you see them, show them this information,' which was followed by a series of random letters and numbers.

In an email, a YouTube spokeswoman said the company was aware of the shutdown. 'Some people encountered errors, or a slower than normal experience on YouTube today,' the statement said. 'We worked quickly to address the issue and fixed the problem. We're sorry for any inconvenience this caused.'

Although the site was down for only about 30 minutes, the reaction online was swift, and sometimes humorous, especially on Twitter:

youtube breaks, my career and life's work disappears. i'll be applying for a job at popeye's if anyone needs me

This post has been revised to reflect the following correction: Correction: November 18, 2013

Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this post misstated the day when YouTube went down. It was Monday, not Wednesday.
