YouTube temporarily goes down

More than one billion unique users access the eight-year-old site each month, according to the website.

There wasn't a lot to see on YouTube Monday afternoon.

The popular video website appears to have crashed, with a '500 Internal Server Error' greeting users attempting to access the homepage, but the outage didn't last long as the site was back up shortly after 5:53p.m.

'Sorry, something went wrong,' text on the homepage now reads. 'A team of highly trained monkeys has been dispatched to deal with this situation.'

The error notice is followed by a jumble of letter, numbers and other characters.
