Youtube comments get a Google+ overhaul

DO IT YOURSELF VIDEO WEBSITE Youtube has started rolling out changes to its comment system, in which the Google owned venture will link comments to users' Google+ accounts.

Previously Youtube has been a quagmire of trolling and unhelpful comments, based on an honour system that didn't work. Comedian Adam Buxton even turned the art of mocking absurd Youtube comments into the successful stage and television show Bug.

However, the relative anonymity afforded to commenters who have been able to indiscriminantly write 'DATS FAT! LOL! :)' at videos of cats will disappear as Google+ profiling will allow fellow users to see exactly who and where the moron is, what they look like, their marital status (single) and probably what they had for lunch.

Although the enforcement of the scheme is a new development, it is estimated that four out of five Youtube users have already linked their Google+ account to Youtube. The move follows a strategy in which Google brought its sometimes denigrated social network to app reviews.

This once again shows Google's ability to leverage its existing hit services to drive up engagement with Google+. That can now claim to be the second largest social network in the world, as 500 million users of Youtube were forced to switch to Google credentials, which meant that they were automatically registered with Google+.

Once the whole Youtube comments system is live, Youtube comments will be ordered by Google+ social network factors, including the number of +1s received, the number of replies to each comment and the credibility of the author. In addition Google will be able to pre-block words and flag individual users for moderation if they've had a potty-mouth in the past. ยต
