The Twitter fame game: Following celebs

HOLLYWOOD - This week singer Katy Perry dethroned Justin Bieber as the most followed celebrity on Twitter, with 46.7 million followers to his 46.6 million.

The most followed folks on the micro blogging network are celebrities, which got us to thinking - what are we learning from them when we read their tweets?

So we went out to Hollywood Boulevard here to get the lowdown on celebrity tweets from tourists, the folks checking out the stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

'I just like getting updated on what's going on and who's doing what,' says Patricia Giraldo of Chicago.

Chase Hoffman from La Verne, Minn., follows rapper Eminem (@marshallmathers) and prefers his musings to reading about him, say, in Rolling Stone.

'You know what they're doing every day, and you can hear about it all the time,' he says.

Monica Giraldo (Patricia's sister) is a huge fan of Sofia Vergara of ABC's Modern Family - and via Twitter, she feels even closer via reading her @sofiavergara feed.

'She just re-tweeted a picture of us, so we're Twitter famous right now,' she says. 'I love it.'

Ethan Maharaj of Montreal follows director Judd Apatow, (@juddapatow) best known for his comedic take on life in films like This is 40 and Knocked Up.

'He's a really political guy on Twitter,' he says. 'He doesn't crack a lot of jokes, just talks about causes and American politics.'

On the flip side, Laurence Charest of Montreal prefers following former Bachelorette Emily Maynard from the ABC reality series. 'She talks about her jewelry and style - it's interesting to me.'

Melissa Quintas of Los Angeles follows celebrities like Perry and Bieber because 'they always have interesting things to say. Some of them live in Los Angeles, and I like to find new interesting spots in the city.'

Reality alert: Most celebrities farm out their tweet writing to staffers - even if the original ideas come from them.

Still, says Monica Giraldo: 'It's really interesting to see how other people live. So just being a part of their lives in a way is really cool.'
