Tumblr Launches First (Yosemite

Big on blogging? Totally into Tumblr? Climbing the mountains of Apple's latest OS X update, Yosemite?

If so, you'll probably be interested to know that Tumblr has officially launched its first-ever desktop application, but there's a slight catch. The app, now available on the Mac App store, is Yosemite-only. Unless you have OS X 10.10, no desktop-based Tumblr for you.

If you do install the free app, however, you'll be able to use it to all of two things: Browse Tumblr using a giant-sized version of the typical mobile Tumblr app, or post content directly to Tumblr. That's it. It's pretty no-frills, but that's kind of the point, as indicated by the app's description on the Mac App store.

'What does the official Tumblr app do? Two things. Two fascinating things,' reads Tumblr's description. 'It goes to Tumblr and only to Tumblr. You can even make it full screen, so that your computer displays 0% non-Tumblr content.'

Additionally, notes Tumblr, the app 'lets you post to Tumblr from almost anywhere on your Mac. If a window has a share button, you can share things from that window to Tumblr.'

There's no indication that Tumblr's first foray into the desktop will turn into a cross-platform adventure, unfortunately. While I'm sure Windows users would love a chance to blog directly out of Windows using an official Tumblr app, it remains to be seen whether Tumblr will go this route. As VentureBeat suggests, perhaps Tumblr might wait until Microsoft pushes Windows 10 out the door before it works on a Windows-specific application.

You could, of course, also just use your Web browser or mobile device to post to Tumblr, as its millions of users are undoubtedly doing. According to figures from comScore, mobile Tumblr visitors finally passed up desktop Tumblr visitors this year—the former grew to 25.7 visitors by June of 2014, whereas the latter shrank from 36.1 million to 23.3 million compared to one year prior.
