(CBS) - Officials at Skokie's McCracken Middle School canceled school Wednesday because police are investigating posts on picture-sharing site Instagram.
CBS 2's Jim Williams reports while we don't know the nature of those Instagram posts, Skokie Police are taking then so seriously they're asking federal agents to join the investigation.
Today at the McCracken School, crews did some maintenance but there were no students there.
In a letter to parents, the dean of students indicated a series of alarming posts were made on Instagram. the photo-sharing social media site.
'Some of our McCracken students are following anonymous users and/or allowing anonymous users to access their Instagram accounts... These anonymous users are able to view students' comments and photos, and post comments of their own,' the letter said.
Recorded calls were made to parents telling them there would be no school Wednesday.
'We're still investigating how credible the threats are,' said Skokie Police officer Erick Swaback. 'There was nothing specific about a date, time or location, but it was enough that it warranted an investigation.'
Skokie police are enlisting the support of federal law enforcement officials.
'The digital footprint that people leave behind is indelible and it's just going to take special expertise to find it to trace it backwards and I'm sure they'll know in a matter of days who did this,' said CBS 2 security consultant Ross Rice, is former FBI special agent.
As the investigation continues, it is not known if school will be open Thursday.
