DENVER - Shoplifters are posting pictures of their stolen goods on to the popular social site Tumblr. These photos are called 'hauls' and they document theft on a particular day, or at a specific store. Tumblr users with anonymous names like Klept0fairy and Princess Lift share shoplifting advice. Everything from divulging the locations of closed-circuit television cameras to tips for discreetly removing tags in dressing rooms. Princess Lift posts itemized lists of stolen merchandise complete with price and retailer. In a recent trip to an outlet mall, the blogger details goods stolen from Bath and Body Works, Zumiez, and others.
Some identify shoplifting as a political act. On the Tumblr 'Anonymous Shoplifter,' the author claims that 'we are forced to live in a system that steals from us daily.' Many of the blogs claim they're just a hoax. Lift Lover gives the disclaimer, 'This blog is a roleplay blog. I post things I purchase with my own money and claim that they were stolen.' Bloggers like I Stole the Mall insist '[this] is not a roleplay blog. Every haul reblogged is legit.' A Tumblr identified only as Disney Villains for Justice criticizes Tumblr's shoplifting community for hiding behind a disorder, 'and it's a disorder zero of them have... zero of you have kleptomania.' In April of 2014, Tumblr canceled several of shoplifting accounts, but told Daily Mail that they have no guidelines when it comes to posting consumer theft. It's been several months since the sub culture was unearthed and it's stronger than ever with close to a hundred blogs.
