The change is a welcome one for anyone who's ever turned on Auto Backup and found their photo collection full of junk pictures that random other apps created. The feature still requires that you have backup of the camera roll enabled (so you can't, say, only upload screenshots). To make use of the changes, enable Auto Backup in Google+, then head to the Photos app. Tap 'On Device' in the slide-out panel and then you can selectively enable or disable folders by tapping the cloud button next to them. The change appears to be a server-side switch, meaning that whether you've updated to the recent app or not, the option may appear to you. If it doesn't, try updating Google+, or just waiting for it to roll out.
