YouTube Star PewDiePie Gets His Own iPhone App

Disney's Maker Studios has launched a mobile-video app for PewDiePie, the Swedish videogamer who has nearly 30 million fans on YouTube, as the multichannel network increasingly looks to generate more revenue off YouTube.

The free app, currently available only for Apple's iPhone, provides a daily feed of PewDiePie's gameplay videos and other episodes. For now the app does not serve ads but some of the videos promote merchandise for sale (such as the $35 PewDiePie backpack). The app lets users share videos via Facebook, Twitter, text or email, and includes a feature to personalize the video feed.

PewDiePie, a.k.a. Felix Kjellberg, generated $4 million in ad revenue last year from YouTube videos. His YouTube channel ranks as the No. 1 most-subscribed independent channel on the site, with 5.4 billion views to date.

Maker Studios, which Disney acquired this year, has released apps for other YouTube channels and creators including Epic Rap Battles, Bart Baker and Polaris, its hub for gaming and comics videos. The MCN also launched Maker.tv this spring, and has established dedicated sites for properties including ERB and Polaris.

Kjellberg tweeted the news to fans - whom he calls 'bros' - on Monday:

We finally have our official Bro App! It's free, download it and let me know what you think! :-) http://ift.tt/1lti8ux Felix Kjellberg (@pewdiepie) August 04, 2014
