Two days before the Colts cut running back Chris Rainey last month, Chuck Pagano raved about the University of Florida product, saying, ' He looked like the old Chris Rainey' - the one the Indianapolis coach first encountered on a prep recruiting DVD as North Carolina's defensive coordinator.
'It looked like everybody else was standing still on the tape,' Pagano added. 'That's what he looks like now.'
Those comments made Rainey's release on July 28 that much more curious. Pagano cited a violation of team rules and offered no details of the incident that led to the 26-year-old's departure.
That led to Thursday night's preseason opener between the Colts and Jets, when an out-of-work Rainey offered his own take on Twitter.
'Yea I'm piss watching the colts game when I should be out there, too,' he wrote while live-tweeting the game. 'Even tho i didn't break no f**kin team rules, not even.'
Then, when Dan 'Boom' Herron scored the lone Colts touchdown in the second quarter of their 13-10 victory in New Jersey, Rainey threw his fellow third-year tailback under the bus.
'Nice TD Boom even tho u was in the hallway with me that nite when we was horsing around with the fire extinguisher,' Rainey added. 'Man up like i did.'
As is the custom in these cases, Rainey promptly deleted his tweets, blamed his cousin and set his Twitter profile to private, but the tweets live on in screen grabs captured by his followers.

While the thought of Pagano cutting Rainey for 'horsing around with the fire extinguisher' seems silly on its own merit, it remains unclear whether the Colts had further reason to part ways with a player who appeared in just two games as a punt and kick returner after joining the team in November 2013.
Despite a promising rookie season, the Steelers released their fifth-round pick in January 2013 following his arrest on a battery charge for allegedly slapping his girlfriend. The charge was later dropped.
As for the fire extinguisher incident, this nugget from Indianapolis Star beat reporter Stephen Holder offers further insight into what allegedly occurred during Colts training camp at Anderson University.
Anderson Fire Chief Phillip Rogers told The Star that a fire alarm was set off at 9:41 p.m. on July 27 when a fire extinguisher was sprayed in a break room in the Anderson University dormitory. No names were provided. Colts coach Chuck Pagano said waiving Rainey was not performance-based.
Rainey's release was announced the following morning. That's an awful big coincidence if it is one.
