The World Cup means big business, and Team USA has been drawing viewers and inspiring millions of Tweets, according to the latest data from Nielsen.
In the Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings Weekly Top Ten for Sports Events last week, the Ghana vs. United States World Cup match on June 16 topped the list with 3.1 million event-related Tweets that were seen by a Unique Audience of 11.2 million people. Yesterday's USA vs Portugal match came in second in sports, with 3.6 million Tweets seen by a Unique Audience of 11 million.
In series and specials, ABC Family's tween hit Pretty Little Liars topped the rankings, with 405,000 event-related Tweets that were seen by a Unique Audience of 3.9 million people. PLL has already been renewed for two more seasons, and the show isn't just a social media darling - it is also a ratings juggernaut. This month's season five premiere was cable's top-rated telecast for the night in the 18-49 demographic, which is the most crucial demo for advertisers.
Staples like ABC's The Bachelorette, VH1's Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, and MTV's Catfish made it into the series and specials top 10, and HBO's True Blood premiere came in at number seven, with 106,000 Tweets seen by a Unique Audience of 1.8 million people.
It's the seventh and final season for the campy hit, so diehard fans will have to say goodbye to the vampires, werepanthers, fairies, and shapeshifters that have made the show such a guilty pleasure over the last few years. It's not like vampire shows are disappearing, but the True Blood's sexy, Southern, darkly comic tone has been a unique one. We'll see how the series finale fares on Twitter later this month.
