The Rock: 'Hercules' journey on Twitter, Instagram

The Rock brings an impressive social media army to battle for 'Hercules.' We'll see if they show up for the fight on July 25.

You get more than just Hollywood's hardest bod when you sign on Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to play Greek mythology's greatest hero.

You also get his massive social media army - nearly 7 million followers on @TheRock Twitter account and 3.1 million followers at TheRock on Instagram.

The Rock brought them all along for the rough ride filming Hercules in Hungary in the hopes of inspiring them to run to battle when the film opens July 25.

His philosophy to the fans can be summarized: 'If you're going to push your chips in, let's push them in with me now.'

'Every day it was the fun challenge of trying to post pictures on Twitter and Instagram and Facebook,' Johnson says.

These days it's hard to judge true box office love in advance. Films like Muppets Most Wanted and Anchorman 2 make a lot of noise, but don't live up to expectations at the box office.

There's a lot of excitement about Johnson's Hercules, directed by Brett Ratner. But there are plenty of cautionary signs in the rocky film world of today. The Legend of Hercules bombed at the box office in January with Kellan Lutz in the lead (The Rock says the uninspired tale was bound to fail).

While he won't predict box office success for his own version, Johnson can assure a long-established connection with his fans by way of social media. That will count for something when the battle really starts.

'What I am confident about is the connection with the audience,' says Johnson. 'There is a very deep rooted connection to this movie.'
