Guns for Sale via Facebook

Facebook pages like this one will face new restrictrions under an agreement by the company to stop people from using their site and Instagram to circumvent gun laws.

Selling guns illegally online is about to get harder.

Facebook and its subsidiary Instagram have agreed to crack down on people who use their sites to sidestep mandated background checks and other regulations on gun sales.

The new requirements were to be officially announced Wednesday afternoon.

Gun-control groups have long claimed the social networking sites had become a virtual online gun show, allowing anyone to buy guns.

Under the new rules, Facebook and Instagram will delete posts inviting illegal activity, including the sale of firearms without background checks and the sale of guns across state lines.

There will also be an 'age gate,' prohibiting anyone under 18 from viewing posts or accessing forums advertising the sale of guns.

In addition, the sites will allow users to flag posts that may facilitate or promote potentially illegal gun activity, and they will report to law enforcement any gun-related posts that may pose a threat to public safety.

The announcement follows an investigation by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman into gun sales online, and a campaign by the gun-control group Moms Demand Action that quickly drew more than 230,000 supporters who urged Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom to address the growing number of illegal gun sales over their networks.

'Responsible social media sites know it is in no one's interest for their sites to become the 21 st century black market in dangerous and illegal goods,' Schneiderman said in a prepared statement.
