Twitter fans take their shot in the Selfie Olympics

Jacob Robbins, 17, of Georgia, snaps his door-hanging maneuver for the Selfie Olympics.

The Sochi Olympics don't start until Feb. 7 - but the Selfie Olympics are already in full swing.

The first viral meme of the year features a new twist on the self-taken self-portrait, with people snapping elaborate and athletic shots that live up to the Games' slogan - faster, higher and stronger.

Twitter users began using the hashtag #SelfieOlympics on Jan. 2, and handles like @SelfyGames and @TheSelfiesGame have started retweeting the best and brightest digital Olympians.

PHOTOS: CRAZIEST SELFIES OF ALL TIME

This isn't the forum for selfies like Kim Kardashian's infamous booty shot from last year. The focus in the Selfie Olympics is on creativity and physicality rather than self-promoting posteriors.

One woman posted a shot of herself brushing her teeth with one leg high above her head like an America's Sweetheart gymnast. Another wrapped his legs around the top of a bathroom door to hold himself suspended in air.

We'd like to see Danell Leyva do that.

'It really all started late one night,' says Jacob Robbins, 17, of Georgia. 'I was on Twitter and kids started posting crazy pictures of themselves in the bathroom and stuff, so I was like, 'Why not?' '

Robbins - who resembles an athletic Justin Bieber - contorted his body so that both legs were clamped to the door, and snapped a selfie with one hand.

Like its namesake, the Selfie Olympics has quickly became competitive. Users have started captioning submissions with titles like 'Game over' and 'Gold medal.'

As with previous selfie trends, like last year's planking - where people assumed the plank position while jumping into pools or in the stands at football games - and the 'Star Wars' meme of Vadering, minitrends have already emerged.

Some Selfie Olympians are using dogs in place of their faces. Others simply get creative with props, like the woman who brought a beach umbrella, six-pack of beer, bright towels and sunscreen with her to transform a bathroom into a day in the so-called sun.

They won't win any awards for physical prowess, but if the Selfie Olympics start handing out medals for creativity, these competitors have a shot at the podium.

Celebrities have quickly jumped on board. Rapper Big Sean posted a selfie with his tongue out, Miley Cyrus-style, playing Pac-Man in his bathroom. He won't likely feel the thrill of victory, but he doesn't face the agony of defeat either.

Of course, no viral trend would be complete without some good old-fashioned backlash.

'RIP to the Selfie Game,' posted one user, along with a shot of six guys dressed in black, lined up in a bathroom while one 'dead' friend lies in the sink.

Brings to mind the U.S. boycott in 1980.
